#GivingTuesday | #NYGivesDay

53,000 meals Packed at MVCC

United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area participated in Giving Tuesday, also known in New York as NY Gives Day. On this day, nonprofits from across New York State work together to harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations, to celebrate generosity and philanthropy throughout our local communities.

NY Gives Day 2018 was held on Giving Tuesday, Tuesday, November 28, 2018, from 12 a.m. to Midnight EST. During this 24-hour challenge, supporters were able to make an online donation to United Way of the Valley & Greater Utica Area at www.nygivesday.org/organizations/united-way-of-the-valley-and-greater-utica-area, and then encourage their family, friends and colleagues to give as well.

Giving Tuesday is a nationwide day of giving that occurs on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday each year and is a celebration of America's greatest traditions: generosity, entrepreneurialism, and community.

Last year, United Way added a volunteer component to further impact the community on NY Gives Day. This year, volunteers from Mohawk Valley Community College Student Government, Mohawk Valley Community College Professional Association, Utica Teachers Association, CNY Labor Council and the general public gathered at MVCC’s Utica campus to pack 53,000 meals for Meals of Hope and to benefit those in need here in Oneida and Herkimer counties.  Over 150 volunteers contributed their time!

Sponsors for this event were Mohawk Valley Community College Professional Association, Mohawk Valley Community College Student Government, Utica Teachers Association, and CNY Labor Council.  Nirvana Spring Water provided bottles of water to volunteers and lunch was provided afterwards by Casa Imports and Parkway Pizza of Utica.
